Oprah’s Book Club It’s Not
In my gig at The Magazine, from time to time I have had to ask famous people what they were reading. They invariably come up with these intellectual-sounding serious tomes. So, here’s a sampling of what I (a real person) really read this week:
• "The National Enquirer" (headlines only, in the supermarket check-out line)
• An Advil bottle (with magnifying glass)
• "In Touch Magazine" (in the nail salon; "War & Peace" would’ve ruined the manicure)
• "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult (couldn’t put it down)
• An e-mail from an offspring asking for money
So what are you reading these days?
Comments
A wonderful historical novel called "The Last Empress"
ditto the magnifying glasses, thank God for Target 1.00 mags, I have them all over the house!
books: always at least three (one in the car, one in my purse and one next to the bed)
Anne LaMott (bedtime) "Grace Eventually"
Car "History of Swimming"
Purse "The Year of Endless Sorrows"
a must read..."Shadow of the Wind"
My security blanket is knowing I have a pile of books near my bed. Just finished two terrific debut novels set in NYC- Lesley Dormen's, The Best Place to Be and Dana Vachon's, Mergers & Acquisitions. A favorite book that I reread yearly is A Short Guide to a Happy Life by Anna Quindlen. It's about that time!
I too need that pile of books near the bed. Right now I am readin Sue Grafton's series, and I am up to M is for Malice. My Emergency "back up" book is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I have read it at least 5 times, and I think the Outlander series are the best books I have ever read. I also really enjoy Nora Roberts and Dick Francis.
I also have a pile of books by my bed, always have.
I am reading 'Underworld' right now, by Don Delillo. It's thick, which I really like, because I read the smaller books so fast, and have to get another one. I like some of the books recommended in the book portion of Time magazine, which I have a subscription to.
Currently Reading:
Glamour magazine
Jemima J
Country Living magazine
Sex God by Rob Bell
I live alone and always throw my books and magazines on the bed where my significant other would sleep. So when he comes over for a weekend, he always teases me that I'm cheating on him with my books.
I recently bought an anthology of Jane Austen novels....love her. But, I also read chick lit (Lauren Weisberger, mostly) because those characters parallel my single life a bit more than nineteenth century middle class English women do.
A new book by Wally Lamb, Couldn't keep it to myself. Its awsome
